How to Prevent Bed Bugs from Infesting Your Home

Clean Thoroughly

If you want to get rid of bed bugs, first and foremost you must clean! Clean thoroughly! And get rid of the clutter, especially in the bedroom. Remove items they can use to hide behind or beneath, such as pictures, posters and area rugs.

Vacuum Often

Vacuuming is another effective way to physically remove bed bugs and the dirt that provides them with shelter. Thoroughly vacuum infested areas every day. Vacuum all sides of the mattress and box springs (including the void area under box springs), concentrating on seams, creases, folds and around tufts or buttons. Vacuum the carpet/floors, the bed frame, the baseboards , inside and under furniture, upholstery, etc. Vacuum the floors every other day! Empty the vacuum bag immediately, place in a sealed plastic bag and put in an outdoor trash can (if possible, first spray contents of bag with EcoSMART Bed Bug Killer).

Clean Bed Linens

Because bedbugs are sensitive to extreme temperatures, toss your sheets, pillowcases, bed skirt, blankets and mattress pad into the wash, then kill the bugs by placing the clothes in a hot dryer for 20 minutes.

Tend To Piles of Clothes

Piles of clothes make good bed bug hiding places. Do not throw clothes on the floor or leave them piled up on the bed. Use a clothes hamper for dirty clothes until you are ready to launder. Do not let the hamper remain full of clothes more than five days. When the hamper is empty, spray with EcoSMART Travel Repellent. Make dirty clothes a difficult place for bugs to hide.

Isolate Your Bed

Move your bed away from the wall and make sure the linens, bed skirt and blanket don’t touch the floor. This will make it harder for bed bugs to crawl into your bed. You should also consider using a mattress protector (a plastic, zippered cover that full encloses your mattress) that will trap any bed bugs hiding inside…and keep it on for at least 1 year!

Seal Crevices

Try to eliminate possible shelters for bed bugs by sealing cracks and crevices you find during your inspection. Caulk around window and door casings, along baseboards, etc. Also repair peeling wallpaper and tighten loose light switch plates.

Attend to Pets

Keep pets off the bed! Fluffy kittens or dogs are bed bug attractors. Get pets their own bed. Vacuum and air out the pet bedding often.

Use Non-Toxic Pesticides

Use only pesticides clearly labeled for use on bed bugs. Do NOT use a pesticide on a mattress unless the label clearly states you can. READ ALL PRODUCT LABELS CAREFULLY! If you have a bed bug problem, try to use safe pesticides like EcoSMART’s Bed Bug products for home and travel.
